The Lake Abitibi Model Forest (LAMF) is partnering with local school boards to develop outdoor education at an Ontario Ranger Camp east of Cochrane. Several programs being developed include a Jumpstart Program in late summer for students at risk, an outdoor education camp for highschool students, a training session for outdoor education teachers and various “on demand” eco-tours of local Boreal demonstration areas.

Although this meeting in Finland was smaller than originally anticipated*, the smaller size resulted in good, open discussion and decisions being made quickly. It was also acknowledged that although we are a small group, we represent a large group of partners. As an important first step in creating a science/policy interface – it was also recognized that this Circumboreal initiative should/will link science globally as well as link policy globally. I believe all countries that did not attend confirmed their interest in the Circumboreal Initiative and that they did want to participate. The workplan resulting from our meeting will be forwarded to them for input, and possibly a conference call set up to incorporate their input. (more…)
LAMF New Report: FireSmart Project: Final Report
Wednesday, April 15th, 2009The Lake Abitibi Model Forest (LAMF) FireSmart project started on July 21, 2008 when Wally Bidwell met with Jim Murphy, Nicole Galambos, Murray Haas, and Sandro Cirella at the MNR Regional Office in South Porcupine for a FireSmart training session. FireSmart material was passed over to Wally for distribution to FireSmart clients. Following this meeting the LAMF arranged to obtain copies of the fire risk and values maps for the areas that were to become part of this project. The Final Report is available here for viewing.

LAMF: Paving the Way to Stable Economies for Communities in northern Ontario
