The launch of the Forest Communities Program (FCP) in 2008 marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Model Forest of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Under the FCP, the MFNL has begun work with rural communities to implement sustainable forest management initiatives. Residents in these communities have direct interactions with the forest and its resources, and the focus of the FCP is to support SFM initiatives in these areas. (more…)

It is with great pleasure the Board of Directors of the Eastern Ontario Model Forest (EOMF) announces the hiring of Mark Richardson, R.P.F. to the position of General Manager. Thirty candidates applied for the position from across Canada and six were interviewed. Mark is no stranger to the Eastern Ontario Model Forest or the Canadian Model Forest Network. He comes with a wealth of experience in the model forest program being EOMF’s Project Forester for eight years from 1999 to 2007. From 2007 to present he has worked with Environment Canada as an Invasive Alien Species Policy Advisor. Mark has always shown commitment to the Model Forest program and continues to do so as he takes on the role as our General Manager. The potential of forest biomass as a source of renewable energy has resulted in increased demand for this material and Fundy Model Forest hosted a workshop to examine issues related to the sustainable supply of biomass from New Brunswick forests. The workshop provided information, described tools to predict the availability of sustainable supplies of biomass feedstock and identified gaps in knowledge that need to be investigated.
The six presentations are available as videos on the Fundy Model Forest website at

Fundy Model Forest hosted a workshop Tough times, New Ideas, in Feruary that brought together representatives from all links of the supply chain in the private woodlot sector to identify issues and brainstorm solutions to some of the challenges facing that sector. This day-long event drew 41 participants and was jointly hosted by the New Brunswick Federation of Woodlot Owners, the Canadian Institute of Forest Policy and Communications and Fundy Model Forest. It is hoped that efforts will evolve in the coming months to address some of the issues raised. A summary of the discussions is available on the Fundy Model Forest website. Comments can be forwarded to FMF General Manager Nairn Hay (nairn@fundymodelforest.net)

Although this meeting in Finland was smaller than originally anticipated*, the smaller size resulted in good, open discussion and decisions being made quickly. It was also acknowledged that although we are a small group, we represent a large group of partners. As an important first step in creating a science/policy interface – it was also recognized that this Circumboreal initiative should/will link science globally as well as link policy globally. I believe all countries that did not attend confirmed their interest in the Circumboreal Initiative and that they did want to participate. The workplan resulting from our meeting will be forwarded to them for input, and possibly a conference call set up to incorporate their input. (more…)

Prince Albert Model Forest and Saskatchewan Energy and Resources
Curacautin, Chile & sacred Auracaria trees of the Mapuche people.Prince Albert Model Forest and Saskatchewan Energy and Resources
As the aircraft winds its way between mountain peaks towards Santiago’s International Airport, I am immediately struck by the similarity of landscape to that of Kelowna and Kamloops in British Columbia. It’s March 22nd and the first day of fall after a long dry summer in Chile. The pilot announces the temperature as +27 degrees Celcius, and for one split second, I remember the -27 degree Celcius temperature in Saskatchewan I left only 24 hours previously. But, once you leave the airport and head into historic Santiago Centro and the new, trendy Las Condes, you realize there is a vibrancy and sense of purpose about Chile and its people that belies the old images of military rule and poverty. The Lake Abitibi Model Forest (LAMF) FireSmart project started on July 21, 2008 when Wally Bidwell met with Jim Murphy, Nicole Galambos, Murray Haas, and Sandro Cirella at the MNR Regional Office in South Porcupine for a FireSmart training session. FireSmart material was passed over to Wally for distribution to FireSmart clients. Following this meeting the LAMF arranged to obtain copies of the fire risk and values maps for the areas that were to become part of this project. The Final Report is available here for viewing.
